Swiss beat the Germans inside the Rothenbaum
Swiss stars Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré were happy to gain revenge on Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude by beating the German team on Hamburg sand.
The last time the two teams met came in the semifinals of the Gstaad Major when Laboureur/Sude won on Swiss soil to reach the final before going on to win gold.
However, it was a different story in the Rothenbaum as Joana and Anouk blew away their German opponents in style in straight sets on the Red Bull Beach Arena.
“Yes I think we’ve watched that game back a lot!” laughed Vergé-Dépré afterwards. “We analyzed the game and today our tactics worked well. We served well and they had some problems receiving and that made it a lot easier for our game – and of course it feels good!
“Maybe next time we switch and we win in our home stadium and we let them win in theirs – either way it’s a cool way to win.”
For Heidrich, though, that semifinal defeat at the Gstaadium last month is still hard to take.
“For sure it’s nice to beat them but we still lost that game in Gstaad,” she said. “Today we played some nice volleyball and we have a lot of energy which is good.
“It was great playing on the main court, even though we know the crows isn’t backing us, but even so we had some Swiss fans here and they supported us which was fun.
“Now, though we have to go again on Thursday and start 0-0. Every team is that good – it’s the best 12 teams in the world. We’ll fight for every ball and see what happens.”
Tomorrow the Swiss face Czech duo Kolocova/Kvapilova on side court 2 at 12pm CET – a game you can watch live on BeachStream. Click here to sign-up for free.
