Evandro/Andre win books quarterfinal spot
New World Champions Evandro Goncalves and Andre Loyola bounced back from their shock defeat on Wednesday by storming straight into the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over World Champs bronze medalists Liamin/Krasilnikov.
The margins were incredibly tight – their 21-19, 21-19 win over the Russians meant the Brazilians topped the pool…by a 0.22 points ratio difference – that’s just one point!
“We played a lot better today than yesterday,” admitted Evandro, who won silver at the World Tour Finals last season with Pedro Solberg. “On Wednesday our defense didn’t work at all but today we had a lot of good moments.
“The Russians made more mistakes than we did today, though, because our sideout and block was good and that really helped us.”
Having come off cloud nine following their success in Vienna two weeks ago, Evandro says his feet are firmly on the ground as he and Andre look to win back-to-back gold medals.
“We’ve trained a lot since!” laughed the super-server who powered seven aces in their win on side court two. “We worked hard after the World Championships because we knew we had this tournament coming up.
“We’ve worked hard to be here and we want to try and win it. It wasn’t easy trying to refocus after such big win in Vienna because World Championships only come around every two years.
“We’ll wait after the season is over before we celebrate!”
The win for Evandro/Andre means that Russians Liamin/Krasilnikov will play a knockout match on Friday – and you can watch that match live on BeachStream. Click here to sign-up now.
