It’s an honor to play here says Barbora

It was a rematch of a memorable Poreč Major final and the result was the same: Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes beat Marketa Sluková and Barbora Hermannová.

But even though their defeat was their second of the tournament, the Czech girls are delighted that their performances this season won them their place among the best in Hamburg.

“We’re really happy to have qualified via the world rankings – this was actually our goal for the season and we made it!” said Hermannová after their 2-1 defeat to the Sarah and Melissa in the first game on the Red Bull Beach Arena on Thursday. “It’s the cherry on the cake to finish the season here with this prestigious tour.

“It’s a big honor to be here and we have nothing to lose playing against the best 12 in the world. We can show everyone what we have left at the end of the season.”

They are not the only Czech girls in Hamburg of course. And with Michala Kvapilova and Kristyna Kolocova winning their first match in the competition earlier on Thursday, it looks as though the future of beach volleyball in the Czech Republic is in good hands.

“It’s really good for the sport at home,” continued Barbora. “Having two teams here in Hamburg will sure help Czech beach volleyball. That we make such a good result is just awesome – I can’t say much more really…it’s just super.”

Although they have lost both games, the Czechs remain in the tournament – and Barbora believes there are plenty of good things they can take from their latest meeting with the Canadians.

“There’s a lot of positives – I could see a big difference from the morning match,” said Hermannová. “I think we can be more creative on the court and be braver in the matches over the next few days. We’ll push ourselves and see what we can do.”
