No injury will stop Kira Walkenhorst in search of gold
Superhuman Kira Walkenhorst revealed that she came close to not playing yesterday through injury…but today she and Laura Ludwig were celebrating a place in the semifinals on home sand.
Walkenhorst raced to have treatment on a back injury straight after their final pool play win on Thursday night against Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat but she and Ludwig looked fighting fit as they stormed to the semis with a straight sets win over Swiss pair Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich.
“It’s getting better for sure, we really didn’t know if I could play yesterday,” admitted Walkenhorst. “We tried it and it worked and my body is okay. It’s improving and it’s feeling better.
“We really were close to not playing yesterday and perhaps if we were in another country or another city we might not have played yesterday.
“There are so many fans here and they are creating an amazing atmosphere.
“On the court we are helping each other – Laura knows which movements are not good for me and she helped me a lot. It’s all about teamwork and in front of a good home crowd of course it’s important to win.”
There’s no rest for the Olympic and World Champs…they play in the semifinal on the Red Bull Beach Arena for a place in Saturday’s final at 8pm tonight. They meet the winners of either Hüberli/Betschart of Switzerland or Humana-Paredes/Pavan in the last four – a game you can watch live on BeachStream!
