Germans book quarterfinal place as Markus waits on the baby!
Markus Böckermann and Lorenz Schümann won in straight sets – and that was the plan!
What’s even more remarkable about Markus and Lorenz’s victory over US wildcards Casey Patterson and Theo Brunner was that they didn’t even train together today, with Böckermann beside his girlfriend who is expecting a baby!
“It’s been difficult – Markus text me in the morning to tell me he was at the hospital – I replied saying message me if you’re coming or not!” explained Lorenz after their 21-17, 21-19 win over the Americans.
“We didn’t train today – he was at the hospital so when Markus turned up before the game I just brief him on the tactics and that was it!”
As Markus raced back to the hospital, Lorenz reflected on the win that sets up a last eight meeting with Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak.
“I’ve never played them before and it will be tough but every game our opponents are the favorites so we’ll see.
“This experience definitely keeps getting better and better and I think we’re enjoying it more and more with every match, especially with the crowd behind us.
“We have no pressure on us – we’re just having fun but I see we’re improving as a team.”
The duo now face the Poles on the Red Bull Beach Arena on Saturday – a match you can see live on BeachStream…that’s if Markus isn’t otherwise engaged!
