Kantor/Losiak are in the final four!
After losing against the home teams in both Austria and Latvia in the past two weeks, Bartosz Losiak was delighted to finally silence a home crowd after he and Piotr Kantor ended the challenge of Germans Markus Böckermann and Lorenz Schümann.
The Polish duo were beaten in the quarterfinals of the World Championships by Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst two weeks ago – and then were seen off by Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins in the Euros last week.
“It’s good to finally beat a host team,” said a relieved Losiak afterwards. “We lost to the Austrians and Latvians and we knew it would be tough against the Germans with this crowd.
“We were a little concerned because we had the lost to the local team in the last two tournaments we played but we finally won this time.”
The pair now face Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena for a place in the final – and revenge is well and truly in the mind of the Poles who have lost twice against the Americans this season, including in the final in Gstaad.
However, the silver medalists of the Swiss Alps are confident they can turnaround that result on German sand.
“We’ve played Dalhausser and Lucena twice this year and they beat us, but we’re confident that we can win this time,” said Kantor.
Bartosz added: “The Americans are good and although we played them twice this year and lost both, hopefully we can change it tomorrow.”
As for Böckermann, beach volleyball was the last thing on his mind after the German blocker became a father.
“My baby was born this morning and my attention was everywhere but not in the right spot,” he said. “I was a little slow and didn’t feed well to play. I didn’t play very well.”
