We’ve reached our top moment…and guesses?!
This week we’ve been counting down our favorite memories from the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone in Hamburg – and now we’ve reached our top moment!
As if there was any doubt, our favorite moment is… drum roll please…
Laura and Kira win gold again
After a season of frustration and injury, which saw them only compete in five international tournaments, Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst did what they promised: to give something back to the people of Hamburg by winning the title on home sand.
“Winning the Hamburg Major last year started something for us and we went onto win all of the titles, including the Olympics,” Laura said after their opening victory of the tournament. “There were people that supported us that did not see us win in Rio and we wanted to give something back.”
And that’s precisely what they did – big time.
Even with the walking-wounded Walkenhorst battling through matches with injury, there was no stopping Germany’s golden girls achieving their goal. Their win over Agatha/Duda in the final sparked wild scenes of celebration – not just on the sand but also in the stands. The Red Bull Beach Arena crowd did their bit to push their heroes on and that’s exactly what happened in the final – just when they needed it most.
It capped an incredible season that also saw the pair lift the World Championship title. Their win on home soil, however, not only meant so much to them, but it also confirmed – as if there was any doubt – that Laura and Kira are the best beach volleyball team in the business.
Well done girls!
