HamburgFinals The women!

There’s a host of top match-ups in the opening stages of the Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals presented by Vodafone.

This season’s World Tour Finals format reverts back to the 2015 edition where two pools of five teams battle for the right to reach the knockout stages. The teams topping the pool advance straight to the semifinals while those finishing second and third progress to the quarterfinals.

So, who is playing who? Check out the women’s and men’s pools below…

WOMEN’S POOLS

Pool A

Home favorites Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude are still looking for their first gold medal of the season. They lost to Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson in the final in Warsaw and the two teams meet in Pool A. Dutch duo Sanne Keizer and Madeleine Meppelink beat Maria and Carol in the bronze medal match in Vienna.

Pool B

Recent Vienna Major champs Barbora Hermannová and Marketa Sluková go in search of glory – they beat Aussies Mariafe Artatcho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy on their way to victory in Vienna. Canadians Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan have only met Mariafe and Taliqua once before – and that was in the final of the Commonwealth Games in April. Agatha and Duda won silver here last year, and have the upper hand of Germans Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider.

MEN’S POOLS

Pool A

New kids on the block Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler have beaten some of the best teams on the beach this season, including Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs on their way to bronze in Espinho. Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak finished fourth here last year, losing to Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai in the bronze medal match. Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Igor Velichko won bronze in Moscow last week, beating Thole and Wickler in the process.

Pool B

Unbeaten in 19 matches, Volley Vikings Anders Mol and Christian Sørum have beaten all four of their opponents over course of the last three tournaments, including their victims in the Gstaad final (Herrera/Gavira) and the Vienna final (Bryl/Fijalek). No men’s team has won more gold medals this season than the Dutchmen Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen who beat three of the teams in this pool on the way to their gold in Huntington Beach in May.
