Brandie and Heather got their second win in Hamburg and they’re not done
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals Hamburg 2018 presented by Vodafone couldn’t have started better for Brandie Wilkerson and Heather Bansley as the Canadians have two straight-set victories in as many matches after they defeated Brazilians Carolina Solberg and Maria Elisa Antonelli 21-17, 21-16 at the Rothenbaum.
Against the Brazilians, the Canadians brought their A-game in serving as they not only scored four straight points out of the service line but also limited their opponent’s side out efficiency to 53.66%.
“There was a lot of back and forth. We had the lead and then they would take it back,” Heather commented. “We were just trying to stay steady and at the end we scored some points on our defense and we had really tough serving today, which put them in trouble and that helped us a lot.”
With two victories under their belts, many would assume the Canadians are on top of their forms, but even though they are please with their performances, Brandie and Heather are both confident they can still get better as the week progresses in Hamburg.
“It’s always about continuing to minimize our errors and keeping control of our game,” Brandie explained. “There are some very strong things that we did and it’s just keeping that consistency, which is just as hard as getting rid of our errors.”
The Canadians are set to play USA’s Summer Ross/Sara Hughes and Germany’s Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude on Friday and they are looking forward to grab a couple more victories to book to top Pool A and book their place in to the semifinals.
“It’s a different format with pools of five and our goal is to win the pool so we need to stay hungry as every single match here counts and you can’t take any of them lightly,” Heather added. “We will be equally as focused to every single one.”
Maria Antonelli and Carolina play just one match on Friday, against the Netherlands’ Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink. On Saturday, their opponents will be Laboureur and Sude.
