Fijalek/Bryl just happy to be competing on the World stage
Grzegorz Fijalek is happy to keep his feet on the ground as he and teammate Michal Bryl booked their place in the Hamburg Finals elimination phase.
The Polish pair needed a deciding set to see off their Latvian opponents, Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs on side court 2 in what was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
And while the Poles could still automatically qualify for semifinals – they have to wait on the final match in the pool between Norway and the Netherlands – Grzegorz isn’t getting too carried away with their performances here in Germany.
“We are still a young team, we have only been playing together for two years, so we have a lot to learn still,” admitted the defender. “This is a great tournament for us and we hope we can continue to play on Saturday.
“We are playing well and we proved that in Vienna with a silver medal, but it’s important to remember we are still a new team, we haven’t been together for 10 or 12 years. The pressure is high for us, but we don’t care about that. This is our job and we love it, it’s the best life we can imagine and that makes us fight for every ball.”
For the Latvians, they must also wait on the result of the final match, knowing they could be in a quarterfinal later, or face a flight home.
“We will wait and see,” reflected Plavins after the defeat. “I’m annoyed that we have lost this game because winning it obviously gave us a chance to get through. Now we have to wait on the next game. There’s nothing we can do now and that’s the most frustrating thing.”
Full details of the quarterfinal draw, will be confirmed later on beachmajorseries.com.
