The beach volleyball elite cannot wait to return for the 2019 World Championships
Home of the German National Teams, Hamburg has recently become used to host the beach volleyball elite as the city hosted the FIVB World Tour Finals in the last two seasons and a Major tournament in 2016.
Next season, however, the city’s relation with the sport will be taken to another level as Hamburg will host the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships from June 28 to July 7, when almost 100 teams are expected to showcase the best of the sport in the Rotherbaum.
But the local fans are not the only already looking forward for it. Thinking about next year’s tournament is already making the players who competed in Hamburg last week’s tournament very excited.
“I’m sure it will be amazing,” said Dutch Olympic medalist Robert Meeuwsen. “The stadium is fantastic and there’s potential for it to be an unforgettable event with the passionate crowd. The atmosphere is unreal and we’ve been fortunate to play here quite a few times, but I cannot wait to come back already.”
The structure prepared for the World Tour Finals will certainly be built upon for next year’s World Championships, but to Brazilian Maria Elisa Antonelli, who finished fourth in the Finals with partner Carolina Solberg, it is already world-class.
“This venue is just perfect,” she commented. “The fans are very passionate, the location is beautiful and the sand is great. We were lucky not to have rainy days this time and the weather was perfect, so I hope it stays the same next year because it just makes the event better.”
+++Thank you Hamburg+++ I am very happy now with the 4th place at the World Tour Finals im Hamburg 😊 Of course we wanted the medal, but lost two times 2:1 at the final day against Norway and Poland. Congrats @christiansorum and @andybmol !! Great Job! The crowd in Hamburg was amazing. Thanks to everyone, who came out and cheered for us 🤗🤗 Hope to see all of you next year at the World Championsship at the same place. . . #grateful #formomentslikethis #gänsehaut #keepgrowing #keepworking #beachvolleyball #Hamburgfinals #worldtour #majorseries #beachislife #fivb @beachmajorseries

It’s hard to argue, however, against the fact that Germans Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler are probably the most anxious to return to the Rotherbaum in less than 12 months. After a surprising and fantastic campaign that took them to the semifinals, the rising stars just wish that time goes by fast.
“Everybody that was here this past week saw how amazing it was,” 23-year-old Wickler added. “The crowd was great and with the World Championships it could be even better. The promoters, Hannes Jagerhofer and Frank Mackerodt, do a great job in events here. We’ll have some other important tournament until there, but this one is certainly the one we are most looking forward to.”
So are we, Clemens!
